Hello,
As most of you know, we were one of the first
dental practices that brought Oral Conscious Sedation to the Central Valley. We offer this type of sedation is
for those patients that are fearful of dental treatment and all that the
dental experience entails. For many of the same reasons, I have
been trying for several years now to bring yet another exciting
innovations to my dental practice that is revolutionary. In fact,
it has been called the most important advancement in dentistry since the
development of the dental filling materials.
What is this innovation? It’s called Ozone. Ozone is a naturally occurring molecule consisting of three atoms of oxygen (O3) instead of two (O2). Imagine if you will, that you or a child visits the dentist and upon examination he finds a cavity. Then, without the use of injections, drilling, filling, or anything that could cause pain, he sprays Ozone across the tooth for 60 seconds and sends you on your way. Sounds simple, but just like that, the infective process of decay is reversed and by natural processes the tooth heals itself and hardens against future infections. Sounds a lot like science fiction, doesn't it? There are over 1,000 research papers to support the use of ozone gas, ozonated water, and ozonated olive oil.
With the early detection of cavities, made possible by the use of our laser detection device, followed by treatment with ozone gas, we can prevent years of lengthily and costly dental visits, with the added bonus of being painless! Another benefit of ozone dentistry is that we can preserve so much of the healthy part of the tooth and thus save more teeth.
It is always fascinating to me to discuss what is old and what is new. There is nothing new here. Ozone has been used in medicine, dentistry, and water treatment facilities for, over one hundred years. In fact, for the last 50 years, ozone dental treatment has been used on over 50 million people worldwide with very few side effects; unlike prescription drugs that sends 1.4 million American to the hospital each year. Ozone dentistry will, some day be the routine in all-dental practices, because of its uses and benefits are numerous. First, as mentioned above, is the reversal of the carious process in the tooth. In addition, we also use it to sterilize the canals during root canal treatment, to sterilize the water lines, to disinfect gum tissues during teeth cleanings, to stop sensitivity in teeth, as a mouth rinse and even as a treatment for cold sores and skin infections.
In addition to treatment, ozone also offers a significant improvement in our sterilization process. Ozone kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi hundreds of times more effectively then chlorine bleach and does it thousands of times faster. Perhaps that is why our own bodies produce Ozone to fight infections. These bugs have no defense mechanism against Ozone, whereas most of our own tissues actually like the oxygenating bath of ozone.
Perhaps you have heard or read about Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease? It is the name for mad cow disease when it is found in humans. The prions, which cause this disease, are a simple chain of amino acids. The prions cannot be killed by traditional sterilization methods, by heat, cold, or bleach. The germs literally stick to stainless steel and carbide instruments. Because of their tenacity to stick, my counterparts practicing in the UK can not use a steel instrument twice because it is estimated that one in 500 people living in the UK now carry this infective bug! What does kill or break apart this amino acid sequence? Soaking the instrument for a few minutes in ozonated water eradicates the prion.
You may ask: Why now? Why haven’t we used this before now? If it has been used in the Soviet Union for 50 years, in Cuba for 90 years and has been available all over Europe, Canada, Australia, South Africa why not here? The answer is the FDA. Treatment with ozone predates the formation of the FDA, so the treatment method is already grandfathered in. It is the ozone making machines that the FDA, up to now, has not approved. I have been trying for years to find a way to offer this treatment to my patients. Now we have an ozone-making machine that is approved!
Now this isn’t a cure-all solution to all of your dental needs, but I am very excited about all the exciting applications, which I have only mentioned a few, of this revolutionary treatment tool, and the savings I can offer you as a result. Better, longer lasting results at less cost, makes me excited to part of such advancement in dental services
So you can see why I wrote this rather lengthy letter to you to announce what is new and what is old in dental services. We welcome you, your family, and your friends to visit us and inquire as to what can be done to improve the overall health of your mouth.
Excitingly yours,
William M. Netzley DDS
