Bad Breath

Bad Breath

Bad breath in many cases, is a symptom of a much more serious condition, such as periodontal disease and decay in cavities. During the disease process found with periodontal disease, the gum tissues break down, leaving blood & pus in open pockets. These pockets are full of necrotizing bacteria, which gives off a foul odor and taste. Plaque forms on the teeth constantly and forms a sticky film full of bacteria. The bacteria create wastes when they feed on sugars in the mouth; these wastes also give off a strong odor creating bad breath. When a patient has chronic bad breath, they should complete an exam with Dr. Netzley in order to rule out decay or serious gum disease issues. Once the cause is diagnosed, a prompt treatment to create fresh breath can be discussed or a solution found to alleviate the concern of bad breath.
